The History
Mengkuang Dam was officially opened by the (then) Yang Di Pertua Negeri Pulau Pinang, TYT Tun Datuk Dr Haji Awang bin Hassan on December 14, 1985. The dam has a catchment area of 3.9sq km and a gross storage capacity of 23.6 billion litres ( almost 10times the capacity of the Air Itam Dam). Built between 1982 till 1984 and has a height of 24.7 meter.(Source: PBA)

The dam is a popular recreational place. Among the activities are jogging, angling (which is illegal but who cares!) and hiking.
Aquarium fishes were released into the dam by visitors.
On weekends, kayaking activities could be seen.

Huge spiders are common around the forested area.
